Message from Principal Ostrander 3-5-2023

Hello High School Families and welcome to a new week!  Please see below for important high school information:

Positivity Project (P2) trait of the week: Although we do not have a P2 trait for this week, we encourage students, staff, and families to be their best selves—practicing kindness and compassion each and every day!

Events: Here are some upcoming events for the high school:
  • 3/9: District Choral Concert: 6:30 p.m. Auditorium
  • 3/10: No school for students: Superintendent’s Day
  • 3/13: Spring sports begins
  • 3/14: “Warrior in Me” presentation: 6:30 p.m.
  • 3/15: BOE Meeting: 7 p.m.
  • 3/20: Budget Workshop: 6 p.m.
  • 3/23: Junior National Honor Society: 6:30 p.m. (for middle school/grade 9 only)
  • 3/24: Community Night
Attendance stats: Our attendance slipped for February, but let’s work on getting our students to school in March!  The 9th grade students enjoyed a ‘donut party’ last week for having the highest daily attendance for the month of January, and 10th grade will receive a reward for having the highest percentage for the month of February!
For the month of February: 9th: 91.2%, 10th: 91.26%, 11th: 90.43%, 12th: 86.78% Overall: 90.01%

Important Information/Reminders:
  • We have a lot of good going on at the high school! Warrior Pride!
    • Congratulations to the cast and crew of “Freaky Friday”—I hope you were able to see the production!  Everyone did an outstanding job!
    • We have many athletic competitions this weekend and many of our athletes made it to sectionals and beyond!  Congratulations on all of your hard work!
    • The student athletic council hosting the 1st annual “Wally’s Winterfest" - it was a great night to celebrate our Warrior athletes!
    • We had a number of our students participate in Cooperstown’s student-athlete leadership conference. They had a great day!
    • We also have many students earning awards in writing, art, music (students participating in All County) and other areas!

  • School begins at 7:42 each day. We are encouraging all students to be in homeroom by 7:42 so teachers can take accurate daily attendance. A reminder that if a student is late without a note from home, they will receive a lunch detention. Most students are arriving 5-10 minutes late, so we are working with them to come to school on time. We want our students to be in class to receive the important instruction! *Seniors with late arrival will not be penalized if they are here by the start of 2nd period*

  • We are seeing more negative behaviors online and on social media. Examples include: students saying hurtful things in a group chat, negative posts about another student, sending/receiving inappropriate pictures. We are working with our guidance department and our school resource officer to put together presentations - one for students and one for families about appropriate social media use. The student presentation will review how to use social media appropriately and the family presentation will give you tips on how to monitor your child’s phone and social media.
    • For example, did you know:
      • some teens create ‘hidden’ Instagram or Snapchat profiles (named “Finstas” - fake Instas),
      • Snapchat has a “for my eyes only” secret folder where messages and photos can be stored but aren’t in common view
      • there are apps that look like common items (like a calculator) where it is a secret photo vault.
Being a high school principal has taught me a lot about the latest in phones and social media (Not anything I WANTED to learn about!). As always, whenever I have to perform a search (whether it’s a bookbag, phone, etc.) I must have “reasonable suspicion to search” and you will be informed! Working together, we can ensure that children know how to use social media appropriately and be safe online.

Thank you for your continued support and reach out with any questions you may have. Have a great week!

Jennifer Ostrander
