Message from Principal Ostrander 10-16-2022

Hello High School Families and welcome to a new week!  Please see below for important high school information:

Positivity Project (P2) trait of the week: Honesty/Integrity: I think this is so fitting as I reflect on the state of the high school. I want to be honest and say that although CV High school is a wonderful and supportive school (and I think the BEST in the region!), we are always looking to improve. A few big issues bubbling up are:

Vaping: We still see vaping in the bathrooms, even though our vape detectors allow us to respond faster in real-time. Tobacco and drug products are illegal on school grounds and prohibited by our code of conduct. If you know your child is vaping, please encourage them to stop. It is HIGHLY addictive, and the companies have targeted their marketing to children - it’s not wonder it’s such a pervasive issue with our youth today! A great resource to help them quit is texting “DITCHVAPE” to 88709. This is sponsored by the Truth campaign and helps people to quit through tips, strategies, and goal setting. If someone is in possession of a vaping device it is 2 days of in school suspension. If a student is in possession of a device that contains THC (marijuana oil) or marijuana in leaf form, it is a longer suspension. That can also affect extra-curricular activities as well.

Another issue are negative and unkind comments being made to each other. It could start off as a friendly conversation online and turns into insults going back and forth. We have such kind kids in our school but sometimes we (counselors, teachers, administration) are seeing conversations that start out OK but then get ‘ugly’ or cross the line from joking to unkind.

Ways that you can help in these situations begin with having a conversation with your child. Also, monitor their social media (including any ‘fake’ accounts they may have). Sometimes children and teens need to be led to making good decisions. Like I said earlier, we have WONDERFUL children in our school, but like any teenager, they are going to try to push limits - that’s all part of their development!

Events:
10/17: French Exchange spend the day in our high school - Welcome to Chenango Valley!
10/19: College Day, BOE Meeting: 7 p.m. Warrior Rooms
10/20: Senior National Honor Society (for 11th/12th grade students) 6 p.m., MS/HS Food drive begins
10/21: Alumni Day and Dinner

Attendance stats: Our school-wide attendance is improving!  Thank you for your help with this!
Week of 10/11: 9th: 92.6%, 10th: 94.4%, 11th: 90%, 12th: 92.2% Overall: 92.4%

Important Information/Reminders:
  • The 2023 CV High School Yearbook is now on sale!  If you’d like to purchase a Yearbook or a Senior Ad, please go to this website and use the code: ybpay.com and enter ID code #12854523  - The cost of a yearbook is $50.00 and ad prices vary depending on the size.
  • 10th Period: A reminder that we have 10th period (2:30-3:00) for any students that would like to stay and work with a teacher or meet for a club. Although we don’t have bussing at 3:00, we’re hoping that students will stay if they need extra help!
  • As we finish out the last 5 weeks of the marking period, please remind your child continue to work hard and give their best! Please check Parent Portal and your child’s Schoology pages to see what they owe and their grades. Reach out to the teacher with questions.

Thank you for your continued support! Reach out with anything that you may need!
