Message from Principal Ostrander 3-20-2022

Good Afternoon, High School Families!

Happy Spring! I hope everyone is having a nice weekend. I just wanted to pass along some updates:

1. Our SADD club is having a fundraiser for the Class of 2022 Post Prom. Please see the link to purchase a Little Caesar's Pizza Kit - Make dinner easy while helping to fund a safe post prom for our seniors! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_WcMf4HX5f_PVohgbDq52RDxTX4c93VgpSREfsyJ0js/edit?usp=sharing

2. The June 2022 Regents exams will be mandatory for all students in a class ending in a Regents exam. In 2019 and 2020 these exams were either not given or optional. This is NOT the case this year. All students in a Regents class will be required to take the exam. The exams are also 20% of the student's final average. Although we don't want students to stress over the Regents exams, we ask that you speak to your child to help them prepare for them. Let them know that passing the Regents is important for the completion of the class and may be mandatory for their graduation. Encourage them to take the practice questions in class seriously, and if they are struggling to reach out to the teacher for help. Our teachers are working hard to prepare them for the tests.

3. In addition, some of our younger students struggle to understand the importance of passing the classes they are currently in. Some think they need an overall average of a 65 to pass the grade (averaging all classes together). Please review with them that they need a 65 or above in ALL of their classes to pass and receive credit. If they do not pass, they will have to either take the class in summer school or repeat the class next year for credit recovery.

4. 2022 Yearbooks are on sale! Please go to this link on our website for more information: https://www.cvcsd.stier.org/Yearbooks.aspx

5. There have been a few changes to the high school in the past few weeks:
** Lunch: We have eliminated a lunch space and students are able to be 3 ft. apart at lunch. The chorus room has seats available for anyone that would prefer to remain 6 ft. apart and we can work with lunch monitors to accommodate those requests.
**Mask wearing: Mask wearing continues to be an option for any students or staff. We have students and staff that continue to be masked for their own protection.
We anticipate additional changes to occur over spring break, but we will continue to work with our local health department and continue to monitor COVID numbers and adjust as necessary.

6.  I again want to remind you about the importance of daily attendance. Our daily attendance is approximately 91% each day.  Although we are improving, we are still missing 40-50 students each day. It's important that students attend school regularly and when they are ill, please call our attendance office so they can mark the attendance accordingly. Thank you for your help with this!

7. Bathrooms: Although we are still experiencing minor vandalism in the bathrooms (food in toilets, writing on stalls/walls), we are able to monitor closely and keep more bathrooms open during the day. If your child tries to use a restroom and they are locked, please have them report to the teacher so we can look into why it is locked. We want students to be able to use the restroom quickly, so they can return to class promptly. Please encourage your child to also report any vandalism to a teacher or the office.

I hope everyone has a great week ahead! Please reach out with any questions or concerns you may have.

Thank you,
Jennifer Ostrander
High School Principal
