April 8, 2024 Early Release for Solar Eclipse

March 12, 2024

Dear Chenango Valley School Community,

I hope this message finds you well. After careful consideration, the Chenango Valley Central School District will plan to release students early on Monday, April 8, due to the solar eclipse that will be visible in New York State.

In the Binghamton area, the peak of the eclipse’s shadow on the sun is expected to occur at approximately 3:23 p.m., when our elementary students are usually being transported home. The goal of an early dismissal is to help avoid any traffic-related issues surrounding the eclipse and allow time for students to be home to enjoy the event. This rare occurrence will provide students with a unique learning opportunity.

Early Dismissal Schedule on Monday, April 8, 2024:
  • CV Middle School and High School: The student dismissal process will start at 12:30 p.m.
  • Port Dickinson and Chenango Bridge Elementary: The student dismissal process will start at 1:05 p.m. (Port Dickinson and Chenango Bridge pick-ups and Chenango Bridge walkers) – followed by buses upon arrival.
Why an early release? Having an early release instead of a full day off preserves the number of instructional days required by New York State, which in turn allows students to start their summer break earlier.

After-School Activities: There will not be after-school clubs/activities at CV on April 8, 2024. Coaches will communicate contest and practice scheduling with their teams.

Eclipse Viewing Safety: If you plan to view the eclipse, wear the proper eclipse safety glasses to protect your eyes from potential harm. Please ensure younger children especially are supervised when viewing the eclipse. Next week, Port Dickinson Elementary, Chenango Bridge Elementary, and CV Middle School will engage in informational presentations, including safe viewing practices, with Kopernik Observatory & Science Center. Following these presentations, the pre-K through grade 8 students will receive safety viewing glasses from their school on the day of the eclipse.

We recognize this change may require adjustments to your personal schedules, and we appreciate your understanding.

Additional Reminder – No School for Students March 14 and 15: Please also note that there will be no school for students on Thursday, March 14 (Superintendent's Conference Day), and Friday, March 15. We thank you in advance for making the necessary accommodations for these days.

All the best,
Dr. Larry Dake
Superintendent of Schools
