CV Senior Achieves Eagle Scout Ranking

Congratulations to Chenango Valley High School senior Gabe McManus who recently achieved the ranking of Eagle Scout!

Gabe joined the Boy Scouts of America when he was 14 and said it has been a rewarding experience.

”There’s a lot of practical knowledge that I’ve learned from scouting such as building fires, camping, cooking and first aid.”

There are several ranks to work up to Eagle Scout, each with its own set of requirements. Among qualifications for the Eagle Scout ranking, you need to demonstrate leadership, obtain at least 21 merit badges, and complete an Eagle Scout Service Project.

With plans to study history in college, Gabe reached out to the Chenango Schoolhouse Museum in the Town of Chenango to see if there was any way he could assist the facility as part of his service project. Museum officials said outdoor tables would be helpful for presentations.

Gabe’s plan was to work on the project with a team of people, but due to COVID-19 restrictions he needed to improvise. Gabe and his father finished building the two eight-foot tables this summer.

Gabe said achieving the ranking of Eagle Scout has also helped to further build character.

“I think it was big for me to realize if I put my mind to something, I can get it done.”

Gabe said that in the future he ultimately plans to pick up more volunteer roles with the troop and may look into getting certified to teach badges.
