‘Life is a Reality’ Expo Empowers CV High School Seniors in Financial Literacy

On January 30, Chenango Valley High School, in partnership with Visions Federal Credit Union, hosted the "Life is a Reality" expo. This event, organized by CV High School math teacher Mrs. Preston, was designed to give seniors hands-on experience in managing finances in real-life situations. Mrs. Preston's LIFE (Living Independently & Financial Education) classes were the first to participate, followed by additional seniors.

The expo simulated the financial aspects of life after school, focusing on the first year of students' chosen careers. Each student received a budget sheet tailored to their selected career, showing their monthly income after standard deductions like healthcare and 401(k) contributions.

During the event, students visited various stations representing different life expenses, including transportation, housing, groceries, clothing, and student loans. They made choices at each station and tracked their budget, learning to manage their income and prioritize expenses according to their financial situation. Additionally, the expo featured a “Wheel of Life” to simulate unexpected expenses in the real world.
