The workshops included discussion on how elementary/secondary classroom teachers can create lessons that address the academic and language needs of ELLs by using an instructional model called the “Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) Model.”

This model uses eight corresponding components:
  • Lesson Preparation
  • Building Background
  • Comprehensible Input
  • Strategies
  • Interaction
  • Practice/Application
  • Lesson Delivery
  • Review/Assessment

Mrs. Savelli also shared a variety of resources, such as NewsELA and Reading Rockets, that can be used to help both students and teachers.
