‘Wellness Day’ Promotes Healthy Choices

On the last school day before Chenango Valley Central School District’s Winter Recess began, Chenango Valley Middle School continued a tradition to promote healthy lifestyle choices.

As the school hosted its 13th annual "Wellness Day" on December 20, students had the opportunity to take part in a day-long series of workshops and activities focused on health and well-being. 

The event began with keynote speaker Jared Campbell, an award-winning singer/songwriter from upstate New York who reaches his audience through the power of music. His message focuses on topics including overcoming obstacles, anti-bullying, respect and leadership. Mr. Campbell asked students to think about the people who help guide and support them in life, and encouraged them to take the time to thank those individuals.

This inspiring presentation was followed by fun and informative workshops from the following presenters:
 
Sixth Grade
  • Mindfulness (Facilitated by Ms. Ann Szymaniak)
  • Self-Control 101 (Facilitated by Chenango Valley High School YES Leads)
  • Nutrition (Facilitated by Chenango Valley Teacher Mrs. Tara Shadduck)
  • Art with Cayman (Facilitated by Mrs. Deborah Abbey)
  • Carbon Footprint (Facilitated by Chenango Valley Teacher Mrs. Stephanie Mika)
  • Speed and Agility by Lifting Spirits for Life (Facilitated by Chenango Valley Employees Mr. Trent Patterson and Mr. William Clark)

Seventh/Eighth Grade
  • Inclusive Sports Training (Facilitated by Jeff Wright of Move Along, Inc.)
  • Identity (Facilitated by Rob Egan of the Identity Youth Center)
  • My Carbon Footprint (Facilitated by Alex Moore and Ingrid Zabel of the Paleontological Research Institution)
  • Nutrition (Facilitated by representatives from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County)
  • CrossFit (Facilitated by representatives from GSR CrossFit)
  • Body Image (Facilitated by Jessica Cohen from Binghamton University)
  • Financial Wellness (Facilitated by representatives from S.E.E.D. Planning Group)
  • K-9 Search and Rescue (Facilitated by Dan Williams and Kara Schaefer)
 
Students had the opportunity to rotate through activities during the school day. Thank you to all who helped to make this event possible!
