Chenango Valley Middle School and High School students put their STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics) skills to the test during a fun “Engineering Day” competition. This year’s event took place in the Broome-Tioga BOCES gymnasium on October 25.
A total of 16 Chenango Valley students were among hundreds of participants from several area school districts.
Students worked in groups of four, and had a set amount of time to assemble a “Rube Goldberg-style machine” using miscellaneous household items. Students did not know what items they would be given before the event, but had to quickly work together to figure out how to create a functional device.
In addition to building upon their academic skills, the hands-on activities also expanded students' creativity and teamwork skills.
