Lions Club Performs Vision Screenings
Thank you to local Lions Club volunteers for performing vision screenings on Port Dickinson Elementary students. The Lions Club has a national program known as Lions SEE, Inc. (Screening Eyes Early). This free community service project screens for risk factors that may lead to amblyopia (commonly known as “lazy eye”) such as myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness).

Trained members of the Lions Club conducted the assessment on students using noninvasive vision screeners. The device provides instantaneous referral or pass results. If a need is detected by the screening, students are referred to eye doctors for a complete eye exam. There were 227 students screened at Port Dickinson on October 22, and 20 referrals were made.

An example of how the screening process works.

Eye screenings can be quite a long process for our school nurse, but the Lions Club’s assistance helps to accelerate this task. Port Dickinson Elementary greatly appreciates this Lions Club program!
