Port Dickinson Elementary Explores ‘Open-Mindedness’
Port Dickinson Elementary students explored this week’s Positivity Project (P2) character strength of “Open-Mindedness” during a morning assembly on September 30.

During the assembly, students danced to a fun song about open versus closed. Then, they learned about open-mindedness with an example from physical education teacher Mr. Kevin Novotny.

You see, Mr. Novotny’s most favorite donut has always been Boston cream. In fact, it’s the only donut he would ever eat. To help him learn how to be less closed-minded in regards to this treat, Principal Hammond brought in a box of donuts. Other Port Dickinson educators were asked to come up and choose a donut they found most appealing. They then went around and each explained why they made their choice. After hearing their explanations, Mr. Novotny realized there were a lot of wonderful donut options that he was missing out on. Mr. Novotny learned that by being open to different possibilities, he could discover a variety of new things that he really enjoyed. What a particularly sweet lesson to learn when donuts are involved!

Students were encouraged to keep exploring the idea of open-mindedness and how it can help them to grow and learn new things about the world around them.
