CVHS Students Take Part in 'Feats of Clay' Competition
students taking part in feats of clay competition event

More than two dozen Chenango Valley High School Warriors participated in this year’s “Feats of Clay” competition. The fun-filled event was held on May 3 at the Onondaga Community College campus.

Chenango Valley team members Abigail and Rebecca Mercik placed third in the “Blindfold Throw” event. In this event, a team of two has five minutes to work together and build five pounds of clay up as tall as they can.  The catch is that the team member building is blindfolded! The other teammate can only help by communicating with their blindfolded partner and dripping water on their hands to help keep the clay wet.

Chenango Valley team members Lucas Hoyt, Antonio Briggs, Marrissa Rogers and Catherine Ashman placed third in the “No Hands Throw” event. Working in a group of four, teammates threw the largest piece they could in ten minutes, without using their hands or any tools!

Chenango Valley team members Lucas Hoyt, Catherine Ashman, Audrey Calica and Abigail Mercik placed sixth in the “Cylinder Stack” relay event. Four team members had to throw on the wheel in a consecutive order. They then had to stack the cylinders on top of each other to make a completed structure, as tall as possible, within a ten-minute timeframe.

Other events included “Mug Production,” “Pot Put” and “Coil Building.”

Overall, the Chenango Valley team placed seventh out of more than 25 schools. Great job, Warriors!

Congratulations to the following Chenango Valley High School students whose artwork also received recognition in the “Feats of Clay Juried Exhibition”:
  • Breanen Rought - Creative Drop Vessel
    • IPA Hand Building $$ Award
  • Liana Carman - Greenman Sculpture
    • IPA $$ Award
