Chenango Valley celebrated "International Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Day" on March 26.

Chenango Valley Central School District was excited to celebrate social-emotional learning (SEL) all week leading up to this day, as it is a vital piece of education districtwide. In addition to academic lessons, students throughout the district expand their social-emotional growth with lessons from their teachers, school counselors, and school social workers throughout the school year. The district is also in its second year of implementing the character strength education program “The Positivity Project” (“P2”) districtwide.

Intentional and constructive social-emotional learning is essential for students both in and out of the classroom. Its goals include short and long-term benefits such as fostering positive relationships, understanding and managing emotions, and making responsible decisions.

Additional SEL Day activities throughout the week included:
  • Various SEL activities and lessons provided districtwide
  • A “Chenango Bridge Garden of Positivity” hallway display was created - Students wrote down positive self-talk on paper flowers that was hung throughout in the hallway at Chenango Bridge Elementary
  • Fifth grade students at Chenango Bridge Elementary used recess time to write positive messages with sidewalk chalk outside of the school
  • Moments for reflection, fun facts, and SEL resources were shared during districtwide school announcements
  • Positive messages from middle school and high school students were written to faculty and staff
  • Decorated entrance ways at CV Middle School/High School greeted students with positive messages on Friday morning
  • Uplifting music played between class changes at CV Middle School/High School on Friday
In addition, Broome County Executive Jason Garnar signed a proclamation on behalf of the county recognizing March 26, 2021 as Social-Emotional Learning Day. The proclamation includes a statement urging the consideration that SEL is an integral part of addressing complex issues that face our children such as mental health, trauma, school safety and climate, and college and career readiness.
