Position Summary
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of a school building or assigned area. This position performs cleaning, basic repair, maintenance, and building security tasks. A Custodian may also oversee the work of one or more Cleaners.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Custodian may:
- Clean instructional areas, offices, health offices, and other assigned spaces.
- Sweep and mop floors.
- Vacuum rugs.
- Clean windows, walls, woodwork, tables, furniture, restrooms, showers, sinks, and urinals.
- Refill soap, paper towels, and other supplies as needed.
- Empty waste baskets and dispose of trash.
- Move tables and chairs for school activities.
- Strip and finish floor surfaces.
- Remove snow and ice from sidewalks and entryways.
- Mow grass and maintain grounds near the school building.
- Complete building security checks.
- Order cleaning supplies and products as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of employee overtime schedules.
- Rotate personnel according to district policy.
- Assign and review the work of subordinate staff, when applicable.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Applicants should have:
- The ability to read and understand simple written and verbal instructions.
- Basic math skills.
- Good judgment and the ability to follow directions.
- The ability to use equipment such as a power mower, leaf blower, string trimmer, and snow blower.
- Proficiency with daily cleaning products.
- Experience using autoscrubbers, swing machines, burnishers, grout scrubbers, carpet extractors, and backpack vacuums is preferred.
- The willingness and ability to learn to use required cleaning equipment if not already experienced.
Physical Requirements
Candidates must be able to:
- Bend, kneel, climb, carry, crawl, reach, push, and pull.
- Lift up to 50 pounds.
