Activities Build Teamwork and Safety Skills at CV Middle School
Chenango Valley Middle School students learned some important lessons on safety and working together during physical education class.

CV social worker Mrs. Beth Hubenthal, along with school counselors Mrs. Shelby Samson and Mrs. Deborah Lally, spend time with each middle school physical education class in the beginning of the school year to help instill the objectives of a character education program at Chenango Valley Central School District.

“Warrior Strong” is the name that Chenango Valley has given its “Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.” The “Olweus Bullying Prevention Program” has been used in the district since 2012. Through “Warrior Strong,” students are encouraged to embrace the components of what it takes to be “Strong” (Self-Aware, Teamwork, Respectful, Open-minded, Nurturing, and Goal-oriented).

During the start of each class, students took part in bus safety drills that are conducted to promote safety and preparation, in accordance with New York State Education Law.

After bus safety drills, students returned to the middle school gymnasium to learn about the role of the guidance office and discuss ways to help each other out.

Guidance staff reviewed the definition of bullying and “Warrior Strong Bullying Prevention Rules” with students:
Rule 1: We will not bully others.
Rule 2: We will try to help students who are bullied.
Rule 3: We will try to include students who are left out.
Rule 4: If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home.

Students also took part in team-building activities such as working in groups to solve a puzzle, and helping each other across the gym without touching the floor.

As a result, students discovered that when it comes to a challenge, working as a supportive team can help you find the best solution.
