A seminar called “The Science Behind Success: How the Mind and Nutrition Help to Create Your Future” was held in the Chenango Valley High School Auditorium on March 28.

This informative and motivational seminar focused on the power of the mind and the value of nutrition, and provided strategies that can be implemented into daily life.  It was led by Mr. Bill Clark, CV High School Government, Economics, and AP Psychology teacher, and Mr. Trent Patterson, CV’s Middle/High School Security Officer. In addition to their positions at CV, Mr. Clark and Mr. Patterson recently co-authored a book called “Lifting Spirits: World Champion Advice for Everyday Living.”

Mr. Clark, a weightlifting world champion and record holder, as well as an international Olympic Weightlifting champion, shared mental and emotional techniques used at Olympic Training Centers. Mr. Clark talked about the science behind positive thinking, and how neural pathway creation and the central nervous system can be developed to help maximize opportunities.  He also went into the topic of the conscious, subconscious, and unconscious mind.  Mr. Clark discussed the power of the subconscious mind and the importance of teaching it to respond in a trained matter, rather than to just react. Mr. Clark also emphasized that “What you put in, comes out.” He encouraged attendees to work on their endurance, to never lose hope, and to practice daily visualization/affirmations (particularly in the morning and night, when closest to the subconscious mind).

Mr. Patterson, a former University of Alabama football star, television’s Biggest Loser competitor, and certified strength, nutrition & movement specialist, believes that the mind and body need proper fuel to reach personal excellence. In his portion of the presentation, Mr. Patterson shared input including finding a balance between exercise and nutrition. Mr. Patterson said that it was during the time he took part in the Biggest Loser (post playing for the University of Alabama) that he discovered his missing link to a healthier lifestyle was nutrition. He was already a certified strength coach, and after this experience became a certified nutrition coach.  Mr. Patterson shared “10 Things I Figured Out” including that you can’t outwork a bad diet, the importance of staying hydrated, and the need to learn how proteins, carbs and fats affect the body.  He also shared “Five Tips for Stabilizing Blood Sugar” including eating within an hour of waking up and focusing on eating complex carbs that are broken down slower over time.  Mr. Patterson encouraged everyone to get 7.5 to nine hours of sleep each night, work on managing their stress, get adequate exercise, surround themselves with positive influences, and make time for themselves to work on their needs.  He told attendees that it’s more about a lifestyle change than quick fixes, “The journey never ends. This is about a healthy lifestyle versus just a period of time.”

Following the seminar, Mr. Clark and Mr. Patterson signed books and answered questions.
